When equipment needing to be raised or lowered
is too heavy for rope sets, and the expense of counterweights or powered flying
is prohibitive, the best solution is a manual cable winch set. Ideal for lighting
barrels and tracks, which are usually rigged between shows so speed is therefore
not a consideration. Manual winch sets can even be used to raise whole lighting
grids, access hatches, chandeliers and other equipment. Multiple steel wire
ropes run via pulleys and terminate to a suspension barrel or the flown equipment,
whilst a self-sustaining winch holds the opposite ends. Pile winding winches
ensure that the multi-line flown equipment rises perfectly level, although
standard winches are most common, and either type may be clewed to a greater
number of suspension lines depending on the winch location.
